What are Favourites And Underdogs In Betting?

What is an Underdog?

The Underdog in wagering is a selection with the bigger odds, generally indicated with the plus sign (+) in front of the price. For instance, if the Brooklyn Nets are given odds of +200 to win a match against Los Angeles Lakers, who are priced at -250, the Nets are the underdogs.

The name underdog comes from dog-fighting in the 19th century, when the winner of a contest was referred to as the top dog and the loser, the Underdog. The term has since been used for any competitor that has is not the favourite to prevail.

Underdogs can range from these teams who are only slightly preferred by the sportsbook to those who, with a win, could produce massive upsets in the sport’s world. One of the most impressive shocks of recent years was Leicester City winning the English Premier League title in 2016: they were 5000/1 to win the trophy. It is a perfect example of a massive underdog performance.

What is a Favourite?

The favourite is the team/individual who is expected to win a match or contest. The favourites have the lowest odds to win, and the odds are usually presented with a minus sign before the price. So saying that a team or an individual is the favourite means that the sportsbooks expect that selection to win. Despite that, favourites do not always succeed, as we have seen, for instance, in the Super Bowl XLV in 2021, when the Kansas City Chiefs lost to Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since the expected outcome is not always the actual outcome, it is essential for a bettor to continuously analyse the price to ensure they are not giving away too much statistical margin to the sportsbetting sites, which will almost certainly result in a medium/long term loss.
